Grids have been the primary way to think of layouts in graphics. What if there were new ways of organizing visual elements, to serve as the base for new interfaces?

I started to develop a new abstract layout system with shapes that aren't typical. When brought together by their form and color in groups, they take on an organic shape.

This is an on-going collection of digital illustration pieces, meant as a first step to thinking about how the future of digital interaction might take shape.

Previous / Next image 1 of 48 In the summer of 2006, I travelled to Montréal with a camera and produced a series of street portraits of various individuals. Each photograph was taken candidly, without preparation or staging.

The title "Tire l'esprit du cachot," or "pull the mind from the prison cell," was taken from "The Internationale" written by Eugene Pottier. Each photo is an interpretation on this line, exploring the relationship of space and the individual.

I used the simple graphical structure of a line to abstract the common artist representation of anatomy. A series or pattern of lines, when arranged in a certain way, can give an impression of muscles or nerves.

I used my training in drawing to first make a figure completely of lines that represented human anatomy, then traced the drawing digitally. The result is a comment of how digital technology is affecting our physical selves.

Mordant is an interactive team project I completed in my first semester of my Master's Degree.

I directed and produced the photographical elements to visualize the project's story about a painter coping with relationships, drug use, and their consequences.

Fluxus was a team project completed during my Master's Degree study over a 3-week time period. We took the now common form of communication based on networked text chat, and visualized words and sentences through abstract shapes in a 3D environment controlled by Processing.

We were able to give a certain tangibility to messages sent through a digital medium, as well as the ability to make a visual art piece out of a conversation.

Fluxus was exhibited in 2009 at Midforms, a digital culture festival.

2009 . Interactive Digital Art

Nerves is a digital art piece that was exhibited at Skrol, a digital art show in Vancouver, BC.

Using a touchscreen, people were able to create central forms of 'neurons,' which I programmed to make chains of intersecting branches. People were also able to modify the density of the branches, which alter how 'neurons' are connected. Nerves actively visualizes the sense that digital technology is an extension of us, while inviting people to question the evolutionary nature of digital connectivity.

The video above is a slightly sped up screen capture of a person's real-time interaction with the piece.

This project was developed with Processing.

2009 . Interactive Digital Art

As a self-initiated piece that came out of learning the Processing programming platform, Nebula was initially a prototype for the graphics in another project, Fluxus.

After some further development, Nebula combines the use of organic movement with simple 3D shapes, arranged in an array that gives order to the chaos.

2009 . Short Film . Running Time: 8:30

I was the Director and Cinematographer of Love Song Two, the counterpart film to Love Song One, both of which I created with Mark Freeman as part of an innovative concept in how we create and watch movies.

Each film used the same characters while following a nearly identical script, to bridge the films' narratives amidst their differences in style.

I like to explore the process of transferring physical media into digital form. This is a design that was originally hand drawn, then traced and evolved in Illustrator.

The result is three eye-catching geometric forms that exemplify the possibilities of digital manipulation.
